From 2005 through March of 2013, Digby Pearson of Earache Records ran an “Ask Earache” blog in which fans could ask Dig anything Earache related.  Since Dig no longer keeps the blog active, I’ve decided to highlight some of the more interesting questions here.

This week’s question:  Did Earache really try to sign Darkest Hour?  The version events I heard was that they were friends with a US label staffer who tried to get them on Earache, but said staffer left to go to A-F records and so Darkest Hour went to Victory.  Interestly, Darkest Hour gave A-F their first two EPs to reissue in 1999 because of their friendship with the guy who worked there who was ex-Earache.

Question: As a Canadian thrash-addict who only recently discovered the greatness of Annihilator, I have this question for you. Why is it that your recent re-issues of Annihilator albums are Euro-only? Since Annihilator is culturally significant in every way, I think it’s unfair that us Canadians can’t get a copy, considering the originals are hard to find these days. Are you trying to break my heart?

This week’s question: Hey Dig, what’s the story behind Rival Sons? I mean, they’re not exactly the usual Earache fare…Earache is predominantly an extreme music label and the only thing extreme about Rival Sons is that they’re extremely good; they’re a 21st Century Zeppelin.

This week’s question: You wrote on this blog:  “Earache is not into the Loudness War and we master our CDs carefully, not brick walled to the max.” And you sympathize with “turn me up”?  I just bought Carcass Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious 2008 release Dual Disc. I regret it.  The EQ of the guitars does not sound as good as the original but the worst part: It is bricked! The peaks are cut off. Why compress? What’s the point of playing this on my Hi Fi system? OK, i have seen worse remasters…  I compared 1991 and 2008 release in an audio editor. Image can be found below.

This week’s question:  I’m reading with dismay what’s happening to Roadrunner UK / Worldwide. Can you please give us your take as to what is likely to happen to the bands on the label? I was under the impression that Roadrunner was massive. Will labels like Earache live on?

Question:  Dig, on a drunken night in Boston you told me that you had tried everything to get David Vincent to rejoin Morbid Angel to no avail. Now that the miracle has happened and they are playing new tracks will you be interested in signing them again? Have you caught them live? What do you think – reformed nostalgic rehash or essential cutting edge Death Metal?

Question:  Since you’re very open and honest about the “business” of the music biz- can you just help set it straight on what the bands make as their “pay” JUST from album sales/downloads and what is Earache responsible for?
