Brain Trusts Top 10 of 2014: In No Particular Order Part III

It’s hump day, so we get to the heart of my best of 2014.  Two choices, two more explanations, two more down.  Check the titles below:

Solstafir – Onna: There really must be something musical in the water in Iceland. And yes, I know that Iceland is green and Greenland is ice, but that water is magical! Sounding like the older, more metal version of Sigur Ros, Solstafir plays heavy metal in the experimental realm that wouldn’t rule out a tour with the fellow Icelanders. From relaxed and melodic to tense and abrasive, Onna is a masterpiece that needs to be heard. Preferably on vinyl.


Spellcaster – Spellcaster: Traditional metal at its finest. Mix equal parts Iron maiden, Judas Priest, and Mercyful Fate and you get an idea what Spellcaster sound like. I trekked down to Oakland to see the band this past summer and had a blast. Great live band, shredding guitarists, killer rhythm section, and a true metal vocalist. Need I say more?
